Effa – Toffan Farms from Norquay, Saskatchewan have been crowned this year’s Hudye Soil Services 2014 “Canola King Challenge” winner. Justin Toffan and Scott Effa, achieved the winning yield of 71.57 bushels per acre on their farm in North East Saskatchewan, Canada.
The Canola King Challenge in its 8th consecutive year is a great opportunity for local producers to test new management practices and strategies in an attempt to achieve the highest canola yields possible. This includes, but is not limited to, genetics, seed treatments, chemistries, advanced fertility with the use of micronutrients, fungicides, enhanced technologies and agronomic consulting, reported Dan Owen– Agronomy Manager of Hudye Soil Services.
The Canola King Challenge winner is awarded a $5000 travel voucher to a destination of their choice.
Out of the nine producers that participated in the 2014 challenge, Effa – Toffan Farms recorded the record-breaking yield with 71.57 bushels per acre, more than 2.3 times the Provincial Average. Even though Effa–Toffan Farms won the challenge, all participants deserve recognition for their achievements and hard work that was put into their 2014 crop, reported Dan Owen.
With the Saskatchewan Provincial average at just 30 bushels per acre in 2014, these nine producers proved to the rest of the province that higher canola yields are very possible when maximizing productivity with an average yield between the nine farms 61.57 bushels per acre, which in turn reduces the per bushel cost of production, a concept continually strived for in the annual “Field of Dreams” project conducted by Hudye Soil Services.
